musicworks have been working with an amazing young man, Luke Fiddes, on a new ‘Music in Care’ project – My Journey in Music for young people, including those who have autism and Asperger’s.
Luke has Asperger’s himself and despite the daily challenges that he faces as the consequence of this condition, he regards it as a great asset and something that has made him a better person. Luke has taught himself to play a series of instruments and now uses music to help to shape his day and to bring him “calm and control” when things start to slip or become difficult. In his role as a classroom assistant he uses music as a way to illustrate and enrich the learning process.
Working in conjunction with Luke and JoCo Learning & Development, musicworks have created a new ‘Music in Care’ toolkit – My Journey in Music. The toolkit is designed for young people, including those who have autism and Asperger’s, to help them navigate the challenges of adolescence with the use of personalised music. The project will include a book sharing Luke’s experiences, the toolkit for young people and information and activities for their carers and teachers using music.
As part of this project, Luke has composed a song “I’ll Be There For You” about his experiences of working with musicworks and how music has helped him. This is available to download from iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/ill-be-there-for-you-single/id1140346618) with part of the proceeds going to raise money for the “Journey” project.
John Osborne, Chair and Artistic Director of musicworks said, “Luke is a remarkable young man. He has such a passion for music and how it has helped him with his condition, that it was clear very quickly that we could work well together on something that fitted our current ‘Music in Care’ projects but would allow us to help a totally different group of people.”
To launch the project, Luke will be giving a live performance of his songs and speaking about how musicworks is supporting him to raise the profile of music as a powerful tool in the home and school lives of young people including those with Asperger’s and autism.
8th September 2016 – 7pm at Poppy & Pint – Pierrepont Road, West Bridgford, NG2 5DX in the upstairs function room.
Although the event is FREE we will be fundraising at the event and donations to musicworks Music in Care projects will be gratefully received. Places at the event can be booked via the musicworks online shop here.
